... and i need to do a decent two minute drum solo, and film it. Argh! Real pain in the neck.

I thought i could make it more interesting if i play along to some really ambient music, cos i find drum solos REALLY BORING, so i ended up choosing Treefingers by Radiohead, which is about 4 chords for 4 minutes, perfect for what i wanna do.
I havent filmed it yet (it was too dark when i got home from school, but hopefully it'll be ok tomorrow), but i have recorded a demo solo. Its on SaveFile here - http://www.savefile.com/files/1969723 . What do you guys think??

Amazing Chops man. You turned 15 yet?

I would however have chosen an acoustic set.

I love your intro groove, and would have payed higher attention in keeping that groove into the whole composition. I kinda expected it to come back in the outro etc.

Anyway to bug your parents for some money in recording your solo composition in a real studio?

BRILLIANT idea man! Especially since it's Radiohead (but I don't remember a radiohead song called treefingers!) and it's a UK competition. Soloing over an atmospheric passage is VERY hip and so is your playing, I like it a lot... but my only advice would be ACOUSTIC KIT rather than electric, cause you won't win with an elec kit no matter how good it sounds! Throw in a bit more groove too to contrast your licks. Good luck!

You could get Coldroom studios up in Cumnor on a Friday evening for about 32 quid. They have a Stagg Jia maple five-piece in fairly decent nick that would probably do. Shocking cymbals, mind - Meinl Headliner, ick.

Don't use 24/7 in town - their house kit is a shockingly bad Pearl export.

Personally, i dont think the sound on that recording is particularaly bad, for a TD-6. It's not a top of the line kit, but it can sound quite nice. Thanks for the feedback anyway. I'll include a bit more of that groove in the final vid. Hopefully i should be on better form tomorrow! I can't really see why i would have more of a chance doing it not a not-very-good acoustic than doing t on a not-very-good electric? They must have plenty of cats soloing on a electric set - there can't be that many people with full micked up setups at under 16, can there? Maybe i will go to a studio, who knows. I better do it fast, in any case - the closing date's 1 November.

I can only get about 30 sec of that .WMA file to play properly before it bails out back to the start. I'll try downloading it again...

Not much wrong with the Stagg kit, in my view.

What are you up to next Friday evening, about 6.30-7pm? I'll be at Coldroom for a band practice. You could pop in then and suss it out.

What, the 30th? I'm away that weekend, but if you mean the 23rd i can get there. It would be cool to check this place out - it's like a 10 minute walk from where i live.
